- Purchase a battery-powered radio and know your local emergency stations. The radio stations in our area part of the emergency broadcast system are WQDR 94.7FM and WDCG 105.1FM
- Learn if your area is prone to floods using the FEMA Flood Map Service
- A flood WATCH is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible
- A flood WARNING is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring
- If your home is in a flood zone, strongly consider purchasing flood insurance as part of the National Flood Insurance Program with a local insurance company
- Plan to secure and evacuate a mobile home for other shelter
Act Now
- Listen to designated radio or television stations for emergency directions
- Secure/bring in outdoor furniture
- Do not stack sandbags against the outside of your home. This adds additional pressure which can cause more damage
- Move valuables to upper floors
- If evacuating, do not leave pets behind. Take them with you to a pre-planned safe location
- Stay away from flood waters: do not attempt to swim or walk through
- Avoid flooded roadways. Turn around – don’t drown!
- If instructed, turn off utilities at main switches. Unplug your appliances (do not touch electrical equipment if already wet)
- Watch for fallen power lines and trees. Report them immediately
