District Designations
In accordance with Section 9.1 of the Town’s Code of Ordinances, the Town is divided into four geographical residency districts. The Mayor and two at-large seats may live anywhere in Morrisville town limits. Candidates for each of the four districts must live in the district they are elected to represent. However, Town residents will vote for one candidate in each race regardless of what district they live in.
Please note that residents in the unincorporated areas within Morrisville are not eligible to vote or file for office in Morrisville elections. When incorporated in the future, those votes will fall within the respective geographical residency district. Please check your voter status with Wake County Board of Elections.

Electoral Districting Process
The geographical residency districts are periodically updated, typically after the decennial census to achieve reasonable balancing.
In August 2021, the Town received the results of the 2020 Census, which confirmed a new population count of 29,630, an increase of 5,931 persons from the 2015 Special Census. Based on the 2020 Census, Town Council determined that the current geographic residency districts are out of balance, and although a recalibration of districts because of a Census is not required, Town Council consensus was to direct staff to rebalance the districts. Morrisville, in accordance with G.S. 160A-23, maintains a map of the Town that depicts four geographic residency districts; geographic residency districts are to be designated such that each district Council Member shall represent the same number of persons as nearly as possible. Residency districts are geographic in nature and primarily impact potential candidates for future district seats.
As directed by Town Council, Town staff prepared geographic residency district maps in accordance with the following criteria:
- Develop no more than three district maps.
- Reshape existing boundaries with movement between districts (in lieu of starting from scratch). As much as possible, maintain neighborhood alignment and use natural barriers as boundaries, while recognizing that census blocks can vary significantly in size and cannot be split.
- A 5 percent differential from the average district representation is acceptable (a 5 percent differential equates to +/- 370 persons).
- Current elected officials will remain in their current residency district.
Town staff prepared three geographic residency district maps, all meeting the requirements of G.S. 160A-101 (6) c. At the July 26, 2022 meeting and by consensus, Town Council chose Map1 – Scenario1 as their preferred new district map. The preferred new district map was then shared with the public and input was received through online comments in August 2022. In September 2022, Town Council adopted the Map1 – Scenario1 map, resulting in four districts with approximately 7,400 residents each.
While some districts may look geographically larger than others, this map reflects the most even distribution of residents based on the most current census-based population. Factors such as the airport overlay and more commercially based areas in town affect the size and shape of each district.
